James B. Hyman, Ph.D., Inc. was established in 1996 as a vehicle for conducting research, exploration, and analytical inquiry to improve the life prospects of poor and minority populations. For over a decade, the firm has focused its research, evaluation, and consultation services on devising intervention strategies that are firmly grounded in common sense theories about the nature, causes, and consequences of the problems facing poor and minority peoples and neighborhoods.
Many observers of domestic social policies and programs would argue that our nations's track record at fighting poverty in the U.S. has been mixed at best. Social Security, Head Start and various food programs are among the relatively few success stories. Many other efforts have either failed to produce desired results or, worse, have been counterproductive in their impacts on family stability and individual initiative.
The firm, James B. Hyman, Ph.D., Inc., believes that the lack of success is the result of incomplete understandings. Consequently, we approach policy and program development by constructing conceptual frameworks and theories that help government, philanthropic, and community stakeholders gain a broader and deeper appreciation for the complexity of social issues in their larger community contexts.
To date, our work has concentrated on issues of: Youth Development, Community Building, Prisoner Reentry, African-American Men, and various anti-poverty applications of Social Capital.
